New York Life Insurance is the largest mutual life insurance company in the United States, and one of the largest life insurers in the world. It ranks #89 on the 2013 Fortune 500 list, with about $381 billion in total assets under management, and more than $19 billion in surplus and AVR. In 2007, NYLIC achieved the best possible ratings by the four independent rating companies (Standard & Poor’s, AM Best, Moody’s and Fitch). In June 2009, the same four rating companies reaffirmed New York Life’s “superior” financial strength, and the company is now one of only three life insurers to hold the highest ratings currently awarded to any life insurer by all four rating agencies.

For the past eight years, Bluepoint has partnered with New York Life on a variety of leadership development initiatives designed to drive cultural change and increase the quality of leadership throughout the organization.

Some of these initiatives include:

  • Implementation of the Leader as Coach as a mandatory curriculum module for New York Life’s Manager Certificate Program, as well as a separate initiative to deliver Leader as Coach to 300 IT Department leaders.
  • Building on the success of these programs, Bluepoint was asked to design an Executive Retreat for the top 300 leaders in the organization. The result was the Foundations of Executive Leadership, a three-day retreat that has, to date, been delivered to over 150 leaders with great success.
  • To support and extend the learning for the retreat back in the organization, Bluepoint created the Leader as Teacher segment that provides a facilitator guide and materials for leaders to take the learning back to their own teams.
  • In response to New York Life’s request for additional workshops that would be brief but impactful and could be facilitated internally, Bluepoint developed the Leadership Express Series – a series of short, yet highly impactful, workshops designed to be delivered by internal trainers or facilitators. Over 1000 leaders have already experienced these programs.
